Public Transportation

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) operates the public transportation service in Boston, including the 1st underground rapid transit system in the States, as well as the 8th busiest bus network in the nation, water shuttles and the 5th busiest commuter rail network in America, stretching on more than 200 miles, spanning north to the Merrimack Valley, south to Providence and west to Worcester.

The services offered by the MBTA pretty much cover the entire city area, approximately one 3rd of the city's population using the public transit for their commute to work, fact which means that the public transportation service, in Boston, is convenient and reliable, but it also means that the buses can get pretty crowded, especially during rush hour.

Major Highways and Roads

I-93 - southern terminus is in Canton, Massachusetts, in the Boston metropolitan area, at I-95.

US Route 1 - a major north/south state highway through Boston, the southern US route 1 Boston portion being known as the Boston-Providence Turnpike, the portions which are north of the city being known as the Northeast Expressway and the Newburyport Turnpike.

Route 128 - carries I-95 over a portion of its route west and north of the city.

I -95 - it follows the Route 128 loop around the Greater Boston area to Peabody.

I-90 - its eastern terminus is in Boston, at Route 1A near Logan International Airport.

Easy! Just follow the driving directions listed below!

From Logan International Airport: Head north and turn left. Merge onto Massachusetts 1A S, via the ramp to Sumner Tunnel/Government Center/I-93 N, and turn left to stay on Massachusetts 1A S. Take the ramp to MA-3 N/Massachusetts 3A N and keep right at the fork, to continue toward MA-3 N/Massachusetts 3A N. Keep right at the fork, and the follow signs for MA-28 S/MA-3 N/Storrow Dr, and then merge onto MA-3 N/Massachusetts 3A N. Make a slight right at Embankment Rd/MA-28 S. Continue to follow MA-28 S. Turn right at Beacon Street and left at the 2nd cross street onto Clarendon Street. Turn right at MA-9 W/St James Avenue and continue to follow MA-9 W. Make a U-turn at Forsyth Street. NU will be on the right.
