Northeastern University, officially called NU, formerly known as NEU, is a private research university in Boston, which is the capital and the largest city in the US state of Massachusetts, as well as one of the oldest cities in USA, with a population estimated at a number of more than 620 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 21st largest city in the country.
NU was founded in 1898, as the "Evening Institute for Younger Men", becoming known under its current name in 1935, when the College of Liberal Arts was added to Northeastern, and the institution's name was simplified to Northeastern University. NU is today a leader in interdisciplinary research, the integration of classroom learning with real-world experience and urban engagement, being home to over 35 specialized research and education centers.
Northeastern offers its students undergraduate majors in 65 departments, including more than 125 graduate programs, ranging from doctoral and master's programs to graduate certificates. NU was classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of teaching as a RU/H Research Extensive institution, which means that NU has high research activity, its faculty members having gained national and international recognition for their achievements in teaching and research.
The athletic teams from NU are known as the Northeastern Huskies, most of the teams competing in the Colonial Athletic Association, the university switching from the America East Conference to the CAA for the 2005-06 athletic season. Northeastern has experienced victory many times in the past years, in many of it sports, including in 2007, NU's 2nd year in the CAA, when the women's track team captured the conference championship and the volleyball team finished 2nd in the conference.
